a few things ...
Just some stuff that happened the past weeks / will be happening shortly:
ROJO magazine published a new edition, called "®prana pure solid true" and featuring a spread of my latest works from the series "Being Alex Diamond". Get it at the ROJO-website here.
I just finished all images for my first book coming out in Fall with Gudberg Verlag. The book will be mainly about my latest project, called "Being Alex Diamond" (the one with the mask), but will also feature additional artworks & projects, references and texts by authors I admire. Gudberg is going to publish it for the book fair in Frankfurt this October, expect more details soon.

Also in October, I will be opening my next solo showat the heliumcowboy artspace (October 17 - November 13). It coincides with the launch of the book, which is smart, cos the exhibition will be about the same project, "Being Alex Diamond" ...

Just a week before opening the exhibition I will be part of a huge art project in Lüneburg, initiated and curated by Reinking-Projekte. It is an outdoor-exhibition featuring many internationally acclaimed artists. More news about that soon, and of course at the website of Rik Reinking.
Until then you can still check out the group exhibition "Nachschlag" currently on display in Hamburgs heliumcowboy artspace. I've been joining forces with the likes of Evie Haines, Ephameron, 56K, Will Barras, Jon Burgerman, Stephen Smith, Christophe Lambert, Nomad and the Invisble Heroes, and the show runs until August 14. More info here.
And to finish this monster entry: this is what I am currently doing to relax from all exhibition- and book-related preparations for the "Being Alex Diamond"-project - I will be drawing some tattoo-designs for a few people that asked me to do that lately. I'll be going away for some time now and take refuge in a place you cannot follow.
Enjoy the summer & see you soon!

Setting up the exhibition "Das Herz von St. Pauli" at Iguapop gallery in Barcelona. First time I can show the new photo-painting series, at least the first larger output, besides the 2 large ones heliumcowboy presented in Miami. Ready for Barcelona
Next week saturday, January 17, IGUAPOP gallery in Barcelona opens a group exhibition called "Das Herz von St. Pauli - heliumcowboy strikes back". After IGUAPOP presented a bunch of their artists at the heliumcowboys in Hamburg in summer 2007, this is the rematch-expo: heliumcowboy was invited to show 6 of their artists in a curated group show in Barcelona. Me, I am one of those artists, alongside Nina Braun, 56K, Stephen Smith/NCC, Christophe Lambert and Arturo Sandoval III.

This is an overview of the works I will be showing, all brand new from the series "Being Alex Diamond" (working title :). Click on "continue reading ..." below to view the individual works ...

The next big thing.
First test results from a new series (or much rather: project) I am working on. "Being Alex Diamond" is the name of the thing, and below you find a hint at the direction it may be taking. These two examples are just doodles and sketches over lambda-prints in a format slightly-too-large-for-my-scanner to test out the materials.
But see how nicely I've shaven my legs for the photo shoot! With the hair in my face and on my head, that's another issue... and don't even get me started on the tentacles ...

Contemporape Dept.
Messed around with the cover of DGV's great new book about young contemporary artists (awesome book, here's more info about it (The Upset). Painted over the cover (by Mark Ryden) 'cos the heliumcowboy's asked me to personalise their present for spanish wonder-boy Antonio Santin, who turned 30 at the opening of his show in Hamburg with them and they gave him the book and cake and flowers and (from what I heard) too much to drink.

Art Basel
Been invited to be part of a project at Art Basel / Design Miami early June in, er, Basel. Project for Audi (by mutabor), the main sponsor of the fair; they made a great catalogue (no idea where you can get it), and apparently had a great vernissage with the works of 10 visual artists, photographers and designers from everywhere. Don't know about that either, I haven't been to Basel.

No New Enemies - group show in Brussels

One of my works is part of a great show at "le Botanique" - curated by No New Enemies/modart's Harlan Levey, the show combines a lot of artists from the vast NNE-Network, including Neasden Control Centre, Boris Hoppek, Alex Diamond, Bo130, Microbo, Morcky, the Boghe, Wayne Horse, Ado Jahic, Galo, The London Police, Will Barras, Jon Burgerman, Guillaume Desmarets, Never Effect, Ephameron, Maoma, Btoy, L’Atlas, Jerome ‘G’ Demuth, RuediOne, and Smash137.
Won't be able to make it myself there, but the heliumcowboys were taking the "Myth of the White Buffalo" to Brussels, painted the walls and set up a semi-installation/environment for the painting according to my plans. Seriously.
They came back with a lot of pictures, so please follow the "continue reading..." link below to view more.

(exhibition view next with Boris Hoppek's interactive sheep ...)

Brussel site specific installation details ("Buffalo Hunt"):

Details from the collage:

About the painting:
Alex Diamond: Monopoly Remix: The Myth of the White Buffalo
180 x 190 cm, acryllic, ink, magazine pages/collage on 16 wood panels (2008)
The White Buffalo is based upon one of the most important legends of the Sioux. The medicine man Crow Dog explains, "This holy woman brought the sacred buffalo calf pipe to the Sioux. There could be no Indians without it. Before she came, people didn’t know how to live. They knew nothing. The Buffalo Woman put her sacred mind into their minds.” Albino buffalo were sacred to all Plains tribes; a white buffalo hide was a sacred talisman, a possession beyond price. A white buffalo is the most sacred living thing you could ever encounter.
In short: The White Buffalo Woman appeared to the tribes when food was scarce. Two young tribesmen went out to hunt for game, but instead found a beautiful woman wandering in the plains. While one of them couldn’t resist the temptation, touched her and was immediately killed by lightning, the other one was respectful and took the news about the comingof a holy woman back to the tribes. Later, the woman arrived at the big gathering of the tribes and in a long ceremony introduced the sacred pipe to the chief of the indians. After the ceremony, the woman left, and walking towards the horizon, she transformed into a white buffalo calf.
After she was gone, herds of Buffalos arrived in the plains, allowing the Sioux to kill them for their meat, hides and bones. Since then, the holy pipe stands for fertility, future, survival. It binds men and women together in a circle of love and also stands for the equality of the genders.
In the painting, the White Buffalos hide is created from art magazine pages featuring numerous artist portraits. The pages are whitened and then drawn over with many characters (or souls), fighting today’s battle with an art world that is trying to create icons and pop stars like saviours for an unpredictable future. Would you be quickly tempted by beauty (remember, lightning may struck you), or could you wait until it really is time to feast?

"Welcome to our playground. We had two days to fill the space. It hasn’t happened yet, but whatever happened I’m sure there wasn’t a lot of sleep involved.
No New Enemies is an international network of artists, activists and passionate people, which began as an open minded collective who enjoyed collaborating on the streets for various reasons. One of these reasons was to communicate with a broad and democratic public … to work outside of institution and reject elitist pseudo intellectual garbage. The network aims to place art in public spaces, support young artists with tools and opportunities and question the citizen/consumer dialectic and the military
style uniform of mass media aesthetics. Our voice is recycled. Our approach is DIY and Do it Together.
Everything is propaganda. Critical questions and brave imagination are the tools we have to slice through it.
Recognized for their work as ‘street artists,’ our members have created a language that has influenced every aspect of the cultural sphere. Want support of such a statement? Visit their sites or Google their names. If you look you’ll find their work, because like the artists themselves, it is constantly in motion. Affiliated NNE visual artists include: The London Police, Galo, Logan Hicks, Will Barras, Mr. Jago, Bo130, Microbo, Nomad, Dave the Chimp, Christophe Remy aka Never Effect, Jon Burgerman, Smash137, RuediOne, Morcky + The Boghe = Twothings, Maoma, Wayne Horse, Influenza, Abner Preis, L’Atlas, Ephameron, Richard Dana, Farm Prod, Victor Castillo, Neasden Control Centre, Alex Diamond,

Riding your board for charity.
All artworks for the exhibition next week are completed, really looking forward to setting up a massive installation in the gallery soon. The last stuff I've been working on are these 2 skateboards for the group shows THE HELPING HOUNDS OF HELL ...

I've been invited to participate in this great charity project, which will take place next January and Febuary in Berlin and Hamburg. The list of participating artists is really great (see below), and all of them and everyone else involved, starting with the skateboard company Twilite as the originator of the project and all other supporters like Sage Club Berlin, GDBG Design Company, Die Photodesigner, and the exhibiting galleries Neurotitan (Berlin) and heliumcowboy artspace (Hamburg, who also curated the shows), are working for free to support the SAGE Hospital for children in Senegal.
More info as soon as more comes up, latest in December the website for the project will be up and running, right now it contains the general info, here: houndsofhell.de

Something completely different.
Huh? Yeah. Collages. This one is quite small (30 x 40) and called "Hand Me Pettibons Hands" or something. Or was it "Spot RB'S Hands?" Made other ones a lot larger (70 x 100 cm), but they are not reproduced yet. Even though they have been lying around at the studio for a few weeks now...
This is just a detail, click "continue reading .." below for full image.

More black and white.

It really is. Black and white on wood I mean (Ivory Black and "Off"- or "Old"-White that is). Just the photos are pretty poor, but as the heliumcowboy artspace is going to do a catalogue for the show there on november 30, there will be excellent reproductions soon made from all this. Anyway, this is just a preview straight from the studio with the paint still wet.
Check "continue reading" below for more images.

Black and White continued.
Man, these babies are hard to reproduce with an ordinary camera. Seems to be true, though, that you gotta see art live and not online... Anyway, continuing the series "Sorry baby, I only got black and white to give", Acryllic on wood, 40 x 40 x 4 cm. This one is the same size, same material as the one from the last entry (below), but it looks different - blame it on my camerawork. About time I deliver some works to the gallery, so that they can deal with the reproduction ...

Sorry I Only Got Black & White To Give.
Some new stuff I am currently working on below... So much to do lately, because this year it all hits at the finishing line: My solo show at the heliumcowboy artspace (Hamburg) is opening on November 30th, a day later I am taking part in the group show "Don't Wake Daddy" at Hamburgs Feinkunst Krüger, the week after that some of my new works will be shown at SCOPE art fair in Miami ... and there are two other smaller art projects lined up for the next few months ... all good, all pretty crazy, but that's how I like it the most.
The new stuff, currently in progress (image above shows a detail, click on it and you will see the whole image in a popup): working with ivory black, matting it down more and more to give it a soft feel. Adding touches of dusky white with smallest brushstrokes and letting the shapes wander. Tentactles over and over, but please don't trust them (or your head. It may be on fire without you knowing it.) The wood as a basis give me some kind of an earthbound feeling despite all the weirdness in the work. This series will be keeping me busy for a while now ...

What a terrible Photo, but unfortunately there was no good light and the Camera is crap. Will post better images once this large drawing will be at the heliumcowboy artspace booth at the SCOPE art fair in Basel next week (11. - 17. June)... Format approx. 150 x 250 cm, acryllic paint and ink on thick drawing paper.

well, it took me a while to update here, but there were a couple of new works in the making lately, some of the really fresh ones, three paintings on wood (29 x 42 cm, acryllic & ink), i have posted below ... they will be on exhibit at the scope art fair in new york from feb 22 - 26 at booth 60 (that's the heliumcowboy artspaces' booth). unfortunately the large one i made (a 110 by 86 cm drawing on 3mm white cardboard, mounted on dibond) was sent off to new york before i could take a decent shot ... last minute as usual... well, it will follow here next week ...
inquiries about the work as usual via the galerie heliumcowboy artspace.
and if you only want this page to display my artworks (the few things i have posted here, most of the stuff is over at heliumcowboy.com) - just select the category "just the artworks" ...

this one here's got nothing to do with the three above, but hey, it fits somehow but is on the backside of a drawing board/canvas, is 21 by 21 cm, and was painted some time last fall:

diamond diaries, day 2 - painting the wall.

okay, here we go again ... internet connection at the fair is lousy, i am not sure what they are doing with it here, i guess they don't know either ... well. day 2 started with breakfast and a vistit to the beach ... don't mind the clouds, it is really really warm and nice, and today we have sun and .. well, summer, really. (continue reading below)

setting up the booth yesterday was tough, but great fun also. spent approximately 5 hours on the mural at the outside wall of our booth, while lutz was unpacking stuff and hanging the hoppek and and and. we've ben at the fair ground from early in the morning till late, but as a reward we went for some beers in the breezy miami night close to the beach. it's really good to be here. fantastic athmosphere, and the quality of the exhibitors is pretty high.
today, december 6, the fair started - but only after we went for our first swim in the sea and another huge breakfast with a view of the ocean ...
so, here are some images from setting up the booth and making the mural on december 5 ...

... and this is where our day ended. outside, at a bar, under wild miami skies ...

new artwork from august, well these are two large paintings i did and who are hard to show online, cos the lines are so delicate in contrast to the colours used, so there is one shot from the whole wall (to see the dimensions, above) and two mediocre shots from the two paintings (below), click onto each of them to see a larger picture (1000 pix wide, did i mention i got a huge screen connected to my computer? :)
paitings can be seen live at the art fairs the heliumcowboy artspace visits this year, november in cologne (art.fair, 2. - 5. november) and scope miami in december (7. - 11.12.) ...

diamonds in mokis' forest
well, look what has gotten into the leaves ... a week before opening the next alex diamond exhibition in hamburgs heliumcowboy artspace, and on the last day of moki's fantastic show "fox in the snow" (finissage tonight at 7 p.m.) with all those autumn foliage on the gallery floor, a mean girl with a gun is about to destroy the harmony ...

image below shows a picture taken bei heiko from the moki-show. same leaves as above, much friendlier artwork though... (it's all blurred here, check it out either at moki's or the gallery site)

liberated shapes.
shapes let loose: compared to the geometrical forms used in the 2004-series "strange sofa" (image below), this year they spread seemingly uncontrolled over the surface, accompanied by strange creatures, but still with the same focus on human strangeness ... (image above, another "test" for the upcoming exhibition/click image to enlarge).

44flavours killed my tv.
a small tribute to the guys at 44flavours, who are currently preparing the launch of the third issue of their magazine. they have re-designed their website as well, check it out here. image above shows alex' humble contribution to 44flavours number 3 (enlarge image).
p.s.: can you tell i have been working with a different camera since the last entry was shot? quite a WEIRD difference between those two blueish-golden wood paintings, tough it is the same paint that's been used.

gold, kinder part I
in case you were wondering: the design you see on this page, all images are taken from the new series i started to work on around the end of last year. it is going to be called "gold, kinder!" and is still in its very early stages.
currently there is not much to say about this, can't be too revealing because most of the ideas are still in my head (no, you don't wanna look in there!), but i started with smaller drawings, which eventually will emerge into large format paintings.
all heavily reduced, as usual, but without the colorful LSD-backdrops of the last series (as can be seen here). mostly the colors will consist of black ink and gold pigments, as you may see in the uploaded image below. it is just a detail shot from one of the works, but the gold only truly shows in the original drawing.
i will continue writing about the progress and the thoughts of this series on this site. it will be exhibited for the first time in may or june this year. oh, yes, and one of the illustrations will be featured in the magazine 44flavours, which will be launched (well, the 3rd edition that is) at the heliumcowboy artspace on february 5 during the opening of the 44flavours-show feat. lutz lindemann, julio rölle and sebastian bagge (the artists behind the magazine).
